Alright, so I'm pretty sure I've talked about POKeMMO, a playthrough of the remakes of Red and Blue campaign with other players where one can partake in trading, dueling, clans, and other aspects of MMOs.
However I believe I haven't mentioned Pokemon Showdown, which is the battle aspect of Pokemon in a competitive environment. No grinding to get what the team you want, just choose a server and ladder to compete in, create your team and go.
PokeMMO has been how I've spent some time over the winter and the game has gone through some heavy updating since then. While clan battles and a lot of 1v1ing goes on, I always saw it as the same grindy Fire Red I had played when I was younger. I looked for a competitive aspect that doesn't favor someone who has time to max out their rare Pokemon with the specific personality and special ability they wanted.
In a livestream of a Pokemon Online TCG tournament I followed a link to Pokemon Showdown, a haven for the hardcore Pokemon players - those who knew their matchups and stats and wanted to prove their battling prowess against other players on a ladder that tracks their skill. While I haven't checked it out yet, I've watched a few replays (Like what Starcraft 2 has) and am pretty excited to get started. Pokemon Showdown isn't a LoL-killer eSport but it beats getting thrashed by my brother in Saphire and walking away with nothing to analyze and without a community to learn from.
Tl;dr - PokeMMO is a great way to play through a Pokemon game with friends and a better way to waste time with some good old, reminiscent fun. Pokemon Showdown is a competitive battle service without the grind of creating a tailor-made party and the bragging rights of ladder positions and a skill-based rating system.
