Game: Paper Mario Sticker Star Genre: RPG/Platformer System: 3DS Developer, Owner: Intelligent Systems, Nintendo ESRB: E for Everyone
This game… What can I say about this game…? I don’t like it, yet I don’t hate it either. This game is one of “those” games, where you can’t really put an opinion on whether you like it or not. I might as well get into the exact details about it.
The story took a massive U-turn from past Paper Mario games. Super Paper Mario had an amazing story, pretty much the same case with Thousand Year Door. So why did they make it Paper Mario 64 all over again? It pretty much is “Bowser acquires ultimate power. Bowser kidnaps Peach, and takes her to flying castle. Mario must find several [MAGIC THINGS] to get to Bowser’s lair, and save the Princess”. The only difference is that Mario gets a little partner named Kertsti, a sticker who is a somewhat less annoying Navi. Basically the story is what I said, only it is the Sticker Festival, and the sticker star comes down every year to grant a wish or some bullcrap like that. Bowser shatters the sticker star into comet shards (Gotta collect ‘em all), 6 royal stickers, and Kertsti. Bowser kidnaps Peach, yadda yadda, Mario has to collect all the comet shards and royal stickers, yadda yadda, and Mario has to fight Bowser in an epic duel to the death. Why Nintendo, WHY did you have to give this story the main series treatment?
The game is a turn-based-battle RPG. Your main method of attack is stickers. Stickers are found throughout the levels (note how I said levelS. I will save that for later). Basically you find a sticker, put it in a scrapbook of sorts, use it in battle, and it’s gone forever. I should also say that there are multiple varieties of stickers, each doing different things. Like there are jump stickers that make you jump on enemies, hammer stickers to whack enemies about, shell stickers to launch at enemies, etc. The problem with this system is that it gets pretty annoying once you have to resort to your more powerful stickers, when you are fighting against a flying enemy, and you have hardly any jump stickers. With past Paper Mario games, it was somewhat strategic for you to bonk a spiked enemy with a hammer, rather than jumping on it and hurting yourself. Here, you don’t have the option of using as many jumps as you want, YOU ONLY HAVE A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF JUMPS. Yes, you can purchase more from the store, but even then, you only have a certain amount of space in your scrapbook. The scrapbook space doesn’t help when the stronger stickers are much bigger than the weaker ones. If there was some sort of “Sticker Bank”, this wouldn’t be a problem. I think I should talk about Things. Yes, that is the official name. Basically they are 3-Dimensional objects you would normally find in real life, like fans or scissors. They can be converted into stickers, and be used in battles to deal a lot of damage or cause a special effect They tend to take up a lot of space in your scrapbook, and getting them back is pretty dang expensive. My BIGGEST gripe with them though is that you must use them to pass certain areas. These are not like the partners in past Paper Mario games (I should mention there are none in this game), where they can be called up at any time, and are free. No, if you come across an area where you need a certain Thing, and you don’t have it with you, you have to run ALL the way back to the Thing shop, purchase a Thing, turn it into a sticker and take up scrapbook space, run ALL the way back, and use the Thing sticker to get pass one measly obstacle. One thing that bugs me is that sometimes, it isn’t well choreographed what Thing you need for a situation. For example, there was a tornado I needed to get pass, and the only thing that told me what to use was an outlet… HOW THE HELL DOES THAT MEAN I NEED A VACUUM!? I MEAN COME ON! Sigh… I think it’s time to move on. Outside of the typical battling, the platforming is just like the first 2 Paper Mario games (sans the partners). There are a lot of puzzles to solve too, some of them having me going to find a walkthrough just to get pass (some in a bad way, some in a good way). Coins are rewarded from random blocks found around the worlds and from battles with enemies. If you think running out of coins to buy your stickers is a problem, than you’re sadly mistaken. I had around 1000 coins left after preparing myself for the final boss, and my scrapbook was chock full of stickers. I may have been complaining before about the price of Things, but even though they are expensive, they only left a dent in my wallet. Something they did that honestly surprised me was the fact the game is divided up into levels, like Mario Bros 3. This decision was kinda odd, and even it sorta takes out of the whole explorative aspect of the past Paper Mario RPGs…
Now that I vented out what is bad about this game, story and gameplay, let me talk about the positive aspects of it. Probably the best thing about this game is the music. The music is freaking great. Yes, indeed it is. I could sit down and listen to most of the soundtrack for hours. My 3 favorite tracks from this game have to be:
Gooper Blooper
Boo Night Fever
Kertstis Power
The bosses are not really all that special, though fun nonetheless. They all come with flashy visuals, catchy music, and interesting strategies. They all require different Things to fully lay the smackdown on them. What’s great though is that if you are playing blindly, and you run into a boss that requires a thing you don’t currently have on you, you can run from the battle and prepare yourself. My favorite boss from this game has to be Gooper Blooper, the world 3 boss. It has many rhythm-based elements, including how to block it’s attacks. If you manage to deflect the poison it shoots at you, you can whoop it’s tentacle ass so hard.
This game has pretty good graphics. It looks a lot like Thousand Year Door in the prettiness department. Not to mention, it takes the idea of paper, and really shows that the world is made out of it, unlike past Paper Mario’s. I should mention the writing. This game is pretty damn funny. I remember laughing my ass off at some of the more funny things in this game. Sadly, the character’s aren’t really diverse. We only really have the characters from the rest of the Mario games, such as Toads, Goombas, Koopas, and what have you. My biggest disappointment was that Bowser himself, one of the funniest characters in past games, has absolutely no dialogue in this game. He is as silent as Mario, if not more so.
So my final verdict of this game?
3/5 Jars of Honey I don’t love it, neither do I hate it. It is just there, sitting on my shelf.
