Well, I finally decided to follow recommendations to watch Neon Genesis Evangelion. And I figured that I may as well post my thoughts as I watch it here, like a sort of liveblog-ish thingy. I'm actually already 8 episodes in, but I'll type up my thoughts so far and then liveblog properly in the future! Donlt read this if you're going to watch NGE, obviously, because spoilers.
What I knew going in:
Shinji fights Angels in a big robot.
I've seen some angel designs and they look hella cool?? Like wow??
Shinji's dad is terrible.
It apparently gets super fucked up later on and it has a weird troll-y ending that pissed everyone off (I'm... kind of excited for it, honestly)
Weird religious symbolism everywhere
I've heard the main theme before
I think I heard that one of the characters is a clone?? ?
I;ve seen a triangle w/ a bunch of eyes, which is apparently NGE related
There's a kid with white hair.
It was remade at some point apparently, maybe?
Everybody turns into orange tang, allegedly? wtf
Honestly not sure if these are all actual spoilers, but I think that's what I've stumbled across.

Thoughts re: Ep 1-8, in No particular order:
First of all- Shinji's dad is easily the worst dad I've ever seen. I mean, I thought Anthony Carver (from webcomic Gunnerkrigg Court) was bad, but GOOOOOOOOD DAAAAAAAAAAMN. Petition to get Shinji a new dad?
The main theme is really catchy. Just felt like mentioning.
The Angels look super cool! I like the first one that showed up (Angel 3, I believe) especially. I also really appreciate that one of them was just a big singing blue octahedron. The evangelions are also really cool looking, and manage to each look individual while still clearly being part of a set.
The first two episodes especially had a good base to grow some real dark, surreal horror-ish stuff from. It was actually really cool and got me really pumped. However, that doesn't seem as prevalent in later episodes, which have more humor and are lighter in tone. Of course, I know from late arrival spoilers that it doesn't stay that way forever.
The random religious iconography is also greatly decreased after ep 1+2, but still present.
Tokyo 3 going upside down looks super cool... but seriously you're just asking for those skyscrapers to fall down.
What's an Absolute Terror Field? Angels are protected by them, and Evangelions can also make them (1.0 did in ep 2, at least), but what actually are they?
The angels, evangelions, and humans are all connected somehow. I mean, it was explicitly stated that Angels had similar composition to humans (somehow?). Furthermore, the 'chrysalis' form angel that Rei went in the lava to get TOTALLY looked like 'Adam', the first human or whatever that Bad Dad Ikari got his gloves on. And then there are the Evangelions, which are organic as seen in ep 2, when 1.0 lost its helmet/mask(?) and revealed a fleshy 'true form' that spontaneously grew an eye and looked at Shinji. ! Also, Evangelions were called 'synthetic life forms' in ep 1, iirc. Only certain humans can sync with the Evangelions, and all of them are 14. In other words, conceived just about at the time of Second ImpactWhat this all means, I don't know. Perhaps Angels and humans stem from the same source? Given the ages of humans capable of syncing with Evangelions, it might have something to do with Angelic influence on those children. Maybe Evangelions are some kind of primitive Angel type creature, and the sync-capable humans like... had latent Angel-y-ness buried in the human genome activated by Second Impact, thus letting them sync with the Evas? Honestly I have no clue. It probably all relates to the Human Instrumentality Project, though. Perhaps, if Angels and humans DO share ancestry (presumably through Adam, maybe), the Project is trying to like... activate Angel genes in modern humans? I'm honestly just spitballing here tbh. One major question of course is why the Angels are on Earth, and what they really want.
The show touches on Shinji's emotions about having to fight the Angels sometimes, and I hope they do more with that eventually! I also hope they show more of the other two pilots as well.
Evas 0.0, 1.0, and 2.0 have all been seen. And it;s been mentioned that the Fourth Child has yet to be found. But, in a conversation with Bad Dad Ikari, 6.0 and 8.0 were mentioned?? I mean, it could be explained by just having spares, but if they did why not phase out the older 0.0 and 1.0 models? I might have to find and rewatch that conversation.
Speaking of Evas and pilots, why is Shinji so special? 1.0 protected him even before he ever entered it?? What?? I mean, he's the protagonist, of course, but is there an in-story reason?
The sexualization of Rei and Asuka is reaaaaaaally creepy and uncomfortable. Like, yeah, coming of age story inevitably brings up sexuality, but I don't think that's necessarily a good excuse. It just comes across as super creepy and gross? Like holy shit they're 14
I wonder how long the show is? I have no idea how many seasons it ran for or anything. Which actually makes it super exciting, because I know it gets really fucked up by the end, but I don't know how far through the total length of the show I am, so I can't predict when it will start. Nor do I know how gradually it gets surreal and fucked up. What it all comes down to is that I can't say stuff like 'oh, they wouldn't kill off a main character, she'll survive' because for all I know she might die and this marks the start of the show going totally off the rails. It's actually really great! Anything could happen!
I think that's about it for now (b/c I'm quite tired lol). Hope you enjoyed my inane ramblings? Feel free to give feedback, I guess? bye
